Preventing and effectively treating
muscular skeletal problems in the aging adult will allow them
to maintain their quality of life and independence.
The rehabilitation program for
the older adult must focus towards a multidisciplinary treatment
approach that addresses the overall needs of the patient, not
just the recovery from the immediate orthopedic incident.
- Training in movement skills
- Increased awareness of
environment
- Encouraging continued
exercises and conditioning
- Educating the patient
regarding their bodies physical capabilities
The major goals of physical
activity in older adults are retention of:
- Muscle skeletal function and
lean body mass
- Muscle strength and mass
- Bone mineral content
- Connective tissue strength
- Range of motion
- The ability to maintain
self-care and enjoy leisure time pursuits. These are also
the goals in middle age, but maybe more easily attainable in
younger people.
